Dr. Rama Devagupta: Science Fairs - A Pathway to Strengthen NGSS Science & Engineering Practices in the Science Classroom

Join Dr. Rama, High School Science Teacher and Science Club Advisor as she discusses the connection of Science Fairs to the Next Generation Science Standards Science & Engineering Practices in the classroom.

While science fairs and long-term investigative projects are excellent tools to help students focus on areas of interest they are passionate about, they also serve as a pathway to strengthen NGSS Science & Engineering Practices in the science classroom.

In this session, participants will explore resources ranging from (a) preparing students on how to carry out long-term independent scientific investigations that originate from simple labs from the science classroom, (b) planning worksheets and schedules for science fair participation, (c) monitoring and assessing student work throughout the project, (d) preparing the project display board or powerpoint, and (f) preparing to present their research in front of the judges. Participants will also learn how to help students (1) get access to the necessary equipment to work on their projects, (2) connect with mentor scientists from nearby research institutions, (3) become familiar with the judging rubrics from different science fairs.

After you register, you will be sent a Zoom link to attend. To obtain clock hour information or questions, contact Don Pruett, WSTA Professional Development Coordinator at: puyalluppruett@gmail.com.
