  • "This short course introduces you to an integrated Freshman science course that is relevant, engaging, aligned to NGSS, and accessible to all students. It is grounded in the Ambitious Science Teaching methodology developed at the University of Washington. Each unit is based on a real-world phenomenon, validates and leverages students’ lived experiences, embeds scientific talk and writing, and creates a positive and inclusive classroom culture.

This curriculum has been developed through extensive collaboration of current classroom teachers in North-Central Washington to create a science classroom that mimics how science is actually approached in the real world: in collaboration to figure out real-world phenomenon. This course has improved student engagement and excitement in science, decreased failures, and increased enrollment in more rigorous science electives. Be ready to be a participant in a student-driven classroom built on student voice with high expectations for student conceptualization and communication of knowledge.

    Outcomes include:
    • Introduction and practice with the Ambitious Science Teaching methodology
    • Examples of how to plan, facilitate, and assess instruction utilizing a 3-demesnional approach to the Next Generation Science Standards
    • Overview and engagement with curriculum built around real-world phenomenon
