Professional Learning Strand:  Implementing K-5 NGSS and CCSS

Target Audience: Elementary Teachers, Special Education and Title Teachers, Elementary School and District-level Administrators, and Science Support Personnel

Course Description: This workshop will specifically target Elementary Science Instruction requirements for students in K-5.  As teachers shift their thinking to specific targets for each grade level, there is comforting news that when the Next Generation Science Standards were released, CCSS were intentionally woven throughout the newly released document.  Science is not an isolated subject, but a powerful vehicle where meaningful and powerful literacy skills are developed and where math concepts become real.  Students solve problems and add purpose to newly learned skills.  In this workshop participants will have a chance to examine the Next Generation Science Standards and begin to see how this document can help integrate CCSS goals without adding more to their already full plate.  Teachers will understand how specific science grade level expectations can be identified so as to ensure that students develop foundational skills that are critical to understanding more complex ideas in their science education.  Collaboration with OSPI supported the planning of this workshop.
