Performance Expectation Progression for Waves and Light

WSTA presents a professional learning opportunity grounded in the Science Professional Learning Standards and the Framework for K-12 Science Education.  The six-hour workshop is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the Washington State Science Learning Standards (WSSLS) characteristics and performance expectations (also called Next Generation Science Standards). Participants will experience three-dimensional learning activities aligned to PS4 Waves and their Application in Technologies for Information Transfer.  

Workshop Goals:

  • Increase understanding of Performance Expectations (PE), Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI), Science and Engineering Practices (SEP), and Crosscutting Concepts (CCC).
  • Develop best teaching practices through 3 Dimensional Learning activities.
  • Increase knowledge of a learning progression within the WSSLS, focused on PS4 Waves.
  • Connect aligned Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts/ Literacy and Mathematics embedded in workshop activities.

Workshop Outcomes:

  • At the completion of the workshop participants will be able to apply their knowledge of the WSSLS, three-dimensional learning, learning progressions and aligned CCSS to increase efficiency and effectiveness in teaching and learning in the classroom. Participant content focus will be 1st grade, 4th grade, Middle School (MS) and High School (HS) light and sound waves.  
  • District teams, curriculum specialists and administrators are encouraged to participate.
